Chocolate bars from Eastern Europe - peanut alert

Once again, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has found peanut traces in Eastern European chocolate bars. In the past Lindt, Sarotti, Alpen Gold, etc had the same problem. I wouldn't want to eat Eastern European chocolate these days - doesn't seem safe if u have a peanut allergy.

ALLERGY ALERT -- UNDECLARED PEANUT PROTEIN IN
VARIOUS CHOCOLATE BARS IMPORTED FROM POLAND,
UKRAINE, MOLDOVA AND GERMANY

OTTAWA, June 12, 2001 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is
advising consumers with allergies to peanuts not to consume the chocolate
bars listed below that are manufactured in Poland, Ukraine, Moldova and
Germany. These chocolate bars may contain peanuts that are not declared
on the label.

The chocolate bars affected by this advisory include the following
regardless of size:

Some of these chocolate products may have precautionary warnings on the
packaging with respect to peanuts and are not subject to this alert.

The undeclared peanuts may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in
persons with allergies to peanuts. There have been no reported illnesses
associated with the consumption of these products.

These imported chocolate bars may have been distributed nationally.
Retailers, distributors and importers should conduct their own assessment to
determine if they have received affected products.

The CFIA is conducting further investigations to have products containing
undeclared peanut protein recalled from the marketplace. As this
investigation proceeds and new products are identified, the CFIA will be
posting the list of products being recalled on the CFIA Web site at:

imported chocolate products (see list below). These products may contain
peanuts which are not declared on the labels. Consumption of these
products is of concern only to those who are allergic to peanuts.

The chocolate products covered by this alert include all lot numbers and
sizes of products which do not declare peanuts on the label. Other flavours
not covered by the list may also be affected. The affected products listed
may have been distributed nationally.

The CFIA is currently investigating to have these imported chocolate
products containing peanuts recalled from the market place. The CFIA will
be monitoring the effectiveness of the recalls. As the investigation proceeds
and new products are identified, the CFIA will be posting the list of products

2. Manufactured by Svitoch, Ukraine

All chocolate products manufactured by this firm are affected.
The brand and and product names on these products appear on the labels in Ukranian.
