I found numerous posts since 1999 on carob but not much in the last few years. Seems that many people have asked about it but there is nothing in the last three years on point as whether carob is indeed safe as a chocolate substitute.
Our daughter has in the past (before we knew of her peanut allergy) eaten other legumes including chick peas, kidney beans, lentils without an issue but it sounds like carob could be risky (?)
I would appreciate any updates that people have on carob as a substitute for chocolate when a peanut allergy is present.
Thanks ... NP.

I can't have carob bean gum . . or guar gum. . . or legumes in general. I don't have a dramatic reaction with carob bean gum--just some mild throat itchiness. I used to eat products containing it sometimes, but now I avoid.
Thanks. We'll hold off at this point I think =) ... maybe in a couple of years!

My son is one of the few allergic to more than one legume (those pesky seed pod proteins!), so we had to test carob as well as other legumes/lentils. In his case it was not a problem.
I would treat it cautiously if you have other bean/pea allergies.
