ALLERGY ALERT - UNDECLARED HAZELNUT, MILK OR
PEANUT IN VARIOUS RAPUNZEL BRAND CHOCOLATE
PRODUCTS
OTTAWA, March 13, 2002 - The public warning issued on March 5, 2002
has been expanded to include additional product and allergen information.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers with
allergies to hazelnut, milk or peanut not to consume various Rapunzel brand
chocolate products. These products may contain hazelnut, milk or peanut
which are not declared or are improperly declared on the label. This alert is
of concern only to those individuals who have allergies to hazelnut, milk or
peanut.
All codes of the following Rapunzel brand chocolate products are affected
by this alert as they may contain undeclared or improperly declared hazelnut,

These products, manufactured by Maestrani, Switzerland, are being
voluntarily recalled from the marketplace by Tony Waters Agencies, North
Vancouver, BC. These products may have been distributed nationally.
Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening
reaction in persons with allergies to hazelnut, milk and peanut. There have
been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these
products.

This happens so often! I do not think it is safe to eat any European chocolate.
Well, the big brands like Nestle UK and Cadbury UK do label responsibly, but those other European manufacturers don't. A couple of years ago, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency even found peanut traces in Lindt chocolates which had NO WARNING.
So be careful with European chocolate. The only ones I trust to label correctly are Nestle UK and Cadbury UK.
