Hi, I am new to this board--very excited to have found it. I am an adult with PA (age 35). As a child I always had an aversion to peanuts and avoided eating them (hated the taste), but I did not have a full-blown reaction till the age of 16. I learned about sunbutter on this board and ran out to Whole Foods to get some today. I am shocked at how much like peanut butter it smells! I can't bring myself to taste it even though rationally I know it is safe. I guess if I never liked the taste of peanut butter anyway, I shouldn't have expected anything different. At least my partner can eat it.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for all the good advice.
(Note: I also bought the IM Healthy Soynut butter to have a taste test--my partner says it's not as good as the sunbutter--but now that I've brought them home, I don't want to eat either one!)
Thanks, it makes me feel much better to hear from someone who had a similar reaction to the smell of these products. I will try to get up the nerve to desensitize myself psychologically, as you have. I hadn't seen your other post on the topic (in fact, hadn't even noticed the adults with PA board) but I went and read it. Have to go see what else is on that board, now! I do have support from my partner but it does get stressful, always worrying about this stuff. So thanks again for making me feel welcome.

welcome!
If you peruse the Adults Living with PA board, you'll see I posted something similar to this about 5 months ago. I grew up with PA (am 30 now) and found the IM Healthy soynut butter at Trader Joes. I knew it was completely safe, but like you, I just could not get myself to try it! What I ended up doing was making myself smell it a little each day. It didn't smell "good" to me, but I also didn't have that nasty tinge that PB does. Then, I made myself actually put some in my mouth. It tastes so much different than the associated smell! Roasty and toasty...mmmmm.
So, all in all, you aren't alone. It took me a good 3 weeks of irrational fear of the soy butter. I'm going to order some Sunbutter too, since I heard that's better. But boy, is it filling! It's also nice to finally make energy bars for hiking!
