I hope that this information is helpful to someone. We have gone a whole year without knowing. Last year my son had a very severe allergic reaction after eating a tuna sandwich and some potato chips. Throat closing, Epi-pen, frantic call to 911. He ended up being fine.
Just a little background on him. Starting developing allergies at the age of 6. Went from 0 allergies to about 8 lifethreatning allergies in about a 6 month time. Very difficult time in our lives. Anyways when he had the reaction we assumed that he had developed a new allergy and brought him in to be tested for everything that he ate that day. Much to our surprise, he was not allergic to anything that he ate that day.
Long story short, I just could not give him a tuna fish sandwich after that. I was not happy with the response we got from the chip company, so we stopped using that brand of chips. Everytime we would go to see the allergist, he would ask if I was letting him eat tuna fish again. He told me that he is allergic to so much if he is not allergic to tuna and loves it I should let him have it. Well we have an appointment coming up, and after a year I finally decide to let him have it. Once a week, and only when we are home, and ready for anything. That was about 3 weeks ago. The other day I go to the store to buy more tuna, and there is a big display of tuna on sale. It is not the kind I usually buy, to I pick it up and glance at the ingrediants. Much to my surprise I see Vegatable Broth. What, I say to myself, that is crazy. Why would they put Vegatable Broth in Tuna. I then pick up a can of the tuna we usually buy, and guess what, Vegatable Broth. I rush home and look it up on the Web:
What kind of vegetables are used in the vegetable broth?
A. Vegetable broth is added to some StarKist
Wow, I would've never guessed!
We don't eat tuna for the mercury problems. Better safe than sorry. Also, I couldn't eat it during my first pregnancy as it made me want to... ya know!

I'm not sure if Cloverleaf is available in the US or just Canada, but I thought I would mention here that Cloverleaf has some *fancy* cans of tuna. Some have peanut oil in them. However, they are made in a separate plant from the regular tuna, so the plain ones are still safe for pa. I'm not sure if the regular has soy or broth in the plant. I wouldn't actually buy those kinds, but for myself I wouldn't worry about cross contam. because I'm not allergic to those things.

Anna Marie, I'm sorry, I need more coffee, but I didn't understand this part of your post.

Funny this came up - my son is allergic to soy, and he has been eating tuna since he was two. Went through a phase where he was tired of it, hasn't had it in months. Recently he asked for it and for the first time *bad mother* I looked at the label, and the ingredients were "tuna, soy". In the past he never had any type of reaction to tuna, but of course now I won't let him have it until I see the allergist and ask him about it. I feel terrible, but I thought tuna was *just* tuna, you know? (Bumblebee, US, btw.)
edited because I had the wrong brand named, sorry!

We only buy tuna packed in water. Tuna, water and salt. I don't want my children eating too much sodium, so I always check the ingredients and Nutrition Facts on everything. We get the Chunk Light Tuna which has a lower sodium amount than the Flaked Tuna.
csc, you remember when we first found out about the peanut oil in the Cloverleaf tuna? I eventually called them, and those fancy flavours all come from a different plant. We always buy tuna in water. I wanted to make sure there was no risk of cross contam. with peanut - but I never asked if in the plant the plain tuna in water is made also makes tuna in veg. broth or oil. I don't buy them myself, but I'm not worried about cross contm. with them.
Hmm, the tuna I use is also packed in water, I wonder why it lists soy then? Maybe it's just my brand (Bumblebee)? I'll have to look at other brands and see.
This is very interesting because Mariah says her mouth tingles when she eats Starkist tuna. We've just avoided it for many years....
The tuna we use says packed in water in big letters on the front, but it says contains soy on the back. We use starkist.

That explains why tuna fish always give me an upset stomach. I am allergic to peas.
Thank you for this information.

We recently started using tuna. I buy starkist pouches and it says on the pouch that the broth contains or may contain soy. Do the cans not say that?
