We may be going on a 2-3 day camping trip to Bulington, VT in a few days. We are from Canada so I feel comfortable bringing our own food from home to cook, but my worry is frozen treats such as ice cream and popsicles that I can't bring from home. Any ideas on what brands we can buy at any grocery store in Burlington would be appreciated. We are bringing a cooler but I don't think it would keep ice cream and such frozen. (Unless there is such a thing as a small portable freezer that could be plugged into the car and then again at the camp site??) Also, we may be eating out at a restaurant for 1 meal so any family friendly and peanut safe ideas would be great.
Thanks so much.

Completely different idea...REI and LLBean sell ice cream makers that resemble mini soccer balls: you add minimal ingredients (sugar, half&half/cream, vanilla), ice and salt, have the kids roll it or toss it around for a bit, and you have ice cream!

It's apparently a take off on an old scouting recipe that used tin cans, and the reviews I've read have been very positive. (We ordered one, but haven't used it yet.)

It's a little more work than tearing off a popsicle wrapper, but I think it will also be a fun "camping tradition" for us. It will also give DC something to do while other dinner prep is going on.

I just noticed that you may be leaving fairly soon -- LLBean has a store in Lebanon, NH, if you are touring the area. [edited to add that that store is listed as opening on July 15. Their website also has pretty reliable expedited shipping, IME.] If you google "Play & Freeze Ice Cream Maker, you'll find the website with recipes and directions for the maker.

You might also think of a trip to the Vermont Nut Free shop!

Have a great trip.

Sue

There is a thread on Vermont. I'll re-raise it if I find it.

What do you plan on doing/seeing in Burlington Vermont?

We are planning on heading to Burlington Vermont this summer. We plan on going to Watertown NY (staying in a hotel), then the next day, go to Lake Placid and the Lake George (stay in hotel -- suppose to have LOTS for kids to do) then the next day go to Burlington VT, then maybe to Stowe VT then to Quebec (stopping at the Museum of Civilization) then home, Ontario.

Found it and re-raised it.
It is in Off Topic.

Thanks for the good ideas. Sorry, but what is REI? Can I buy LLBean stuff in Canada? The "mini soccer ball ice cream maker" sounds like such a great idea and I would love to get my hands on one!!

LLBean can ship to Canada -- I just called and checked.

Their website is www.llbean.com .

Search for "ice cream ball."

REI is an outdoor/sporting/camping store. They do have a website, but I think LLBean would probably get it to you more quickly, as they are headquartered in Maine.

They list it as "camper's dream ice cream ball".

Hi. The ice cream ball from LLBean is on back order and will be available on August 25, 2005. Would have been nice to have it during the summer but I will still order it as this sounds like someting that could go on any kind of trip. It calls for rock salt as part of the ice cream making process, does anyone know what this is and where to buy? Thanks.

Not sure exactly where it is, but I think it is near Burlington, VT is the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory. You take a tour of how they make their bears and you can also get to make one (for a fee of course).

There is also Ben & Jerry's, visit the "graveyard" of discontinued flavors; Cabot Cheese, and a great place for home-made cider, Cold Hollow Cider Mill. Vermont Nut Free is further north in So. Hero, Vermont, but worth the trip. If you go up to So. Hero, there is a "fish hatchery" place where you can see where they raise salmon and other fish, then throw it back into Lake Champlain for the fishing industry. If you are driving along, there are many "stone" castle sculptures along the road.

Stowe has Smuggler's Notch. It's a ski resort but in the summertime, its great for families. They have a water park and lots of activities for the kids.

I love Vermont!
