I am looking for some help! I am expecting my third chid next month, and have a son (3 1/2) with a peanut allergy. I have been trying to find out what I need to do to avoid any potential allergy issues with the new baby. I plan to breastfeed, and have read some conflicting articles about the need to restrict my diet to avoid exposing the baby & causing the allergy to develop. The only thing any of my doctors will tell me is that they think exclusively breastfeeding for 6 months (no solids at all)would be prudent. I would think avoiding peanuts would be obvious, but I've also heard that nursing moms with allergy issues in the family should avoid all of the major potential allegens. Neither my husband or I have food allergies. Does anyone know of any resources that could help me out? I really would rather not eliminate dairy, eggs, etc. unless I have to.

Susan, check out http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/allergies.html and see if that helps to alleviate/answer some of your fears. Given the situation you describe and what La Leche has to say about it, I think you probably need only avoid peanuts (a known risk) to start. If you commence breastfeeding and your baby has trouble with your milk you may need to try sequential elimination of suspect foods. But given that neither you nor your husband have other food allergies, I think it would be overkill to eliminate ALL potentially allergenic foods from your diet.
