My 4 yr old DS is PA. Last night we sat in the box at a baseball game with a neighbor and her firends. Her daughter and a few others were eating peanuts. I thought DS would only react if he ingested peanuts, so I just told him not to eat or touch them. A few minutes later he broke out in hives. We had the medic at the baseball field examine him and his airway was clear so we took him home and gave him benadryl.

We KNOW he did not eat any peanuts, so it must have been the smell.

1. Should we now consider him inhalation sensitive?

2. Do we avoid all baseball games, etc.?

3. Do we leave public areas where people are ingesting peanuts?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You'll find people here have different plans for handling these situations. For us, we learned early on that my son had to wear long pants and no sandals to baseball games. He would react when his skin came into contact with all the dust left by discarded peanut shells. We still go to games and have occasionally brought plastic bags and asked our "neighbors" if they would deposit their shells in the bags so they wouldn't blow in our direction. We have also asked to be moved to different sections when we were surrounded by peanut eating fans (sometimes we got worse seats, sometimes better but we always enjoyed ourselves more when my son was comfortable with his surroundings). We've noticed there are less peanut eaters in the expensive seats than in the "cheap seats" where more fans seem to bring in their own Costco sized peanut bags. Here's what I like to sing at the seventh inning stretch
Take me out to the ballgame
Take me out to the crowd
Buy me a soda and popcorn sack
I don't care if I ever get back
for it's root, root, root for the home team
If they don't win it's a shame!
For it's 1 2 3 strikes your out at the ol'ball game!

Hi:

I would consider the possibility that he somehow got peanut residue on his body (hands, most likely?), and his hands found his way into his mouth, nose,eyes...etc, causing the reaction.

You may have already taken these precautions, but when we took my son to a ballgame, we 1)wiped down his seat, and 2) did not let his siblings eat peanuts.

We did not request that others did not eat peanuts (ie, people outside of our family) as those folks would most likely not be touching our son, etc. But because his brothers were very likely to touch him, peanuts were off limits to them.

On the more positive side, I am glad your son is okay, and there is a strong possibility he is not inhalation (sp? I just can't think this morning) sensitive.

Hope this helps,

Kelly

**edited to add that I just realized that it was a friends siblings eating peanuts, and not his own. Because your son is still young, I would request that the folks in your "party" not eat peanuts.

Caitlin and Sara (5 and 7) would not sit thru a ballgame, so I am not concerned with it yet...

If I had boys, that were PA, I would find it VERY difficult to NOT be scared to death about peanuts at a park...

They everywhere there... in my comfy zone... Would I take Ann to a ballgame? We've gone... No problems for her... but shes not her daughter

But -- What I wanted to add, on inhalation...

Went to Whole foods this weekend, and we needed some flour mix, etc... went down the cooking aisle (which has the PB machine, and nuts, bulk bins, etc..) and the guy was dumping one bin into another, or something like that... I saw 'cashews', didnt pay MUCH attention, just knew there were 'nuts' in this aisle at THIS time...

Get thru the lane, as neither girl noticed the nuts... and Caitlin says something that she doesnt usually say...

Can we leave? Something smells funny.

Coincidence, or not, irrelevant. Paid for stuff, and out we go, not a peep from her again...

Just wanted to say I have 3 boys (6 1/2, 4 3/4 and 2 1/2) (oldest one pa) and we have taken them a few times to professional baseball games (both White Sox and Red Sox stadiums) without any problems of any kind and we were not scared to death. All of us had a great time and would do it again and again.

See.. me and OUR lax comfy zone, and we'd say no to the game..

But maybe Id be diff. if we DID have boys and I wanna take them to a game...

Its different, but...

I take the girls to disney on ice, with no problem... at Boston Garden (or Fleet center, or whatever..).

But I dont know if peanuts are such a big thing THERE, but I KNOW they are at games...

Not saying it can't be done (because it CAN)... But for ME -- I couldnt do it

We lasted two or three innings at a St. Louis Cardinals game (GO CARDS!) before Drew had red itchy eyes and wheezing. We left. As much as he would love to see a MLB game (summer is ALL about baseball in our home), we don't feel comfortable being surrounded by peanut-eating fans. We have thought about trying a box, but haven't yet.

To answer your questions...
1. Inhalation or contact sensitive - I assume the kids were being typical kids and touching everyone and everything.

2. We do at this point - but would like to try a box at some point.

3. We do - especially cracking and eating peanuts.

Try bringing some wipes to wipe down the seats.

We go to Mets games as often as possible (darn, those tix are expensive!) and we haven't had a problem yet. We have been prepared to move our seats if necessary, but so far we haven't had a problem.

I hope you can find a solution so your son can enjoy baseball. There's nothing like it!

Amy

P.S. to Jason - I'm not gloating, really, I'm not, so don't take this the wrong way. Pedro has been a godsend this season. We have no illusions about them being in the race this year, but he is so much fun to watch!

Thanks for all these suggestions. Saturday night my husband and I thought - now what? Now I actually feel we have something to work with. Good luck to all of you who are dealing with this.

Not in my comfort zone. My son did have an airborn reaction. So we leave when peanuts are around. Not worth the risk. Lucky for us we are casual baseball fans. Catching a little here or there on TV works just fine for us.

My husband and I went to a Cub's game in June. We could smell the peanuts around us. Quite disturbing. We don't think our PA son would be safe there, even tho he doesn't seem to be highly sensitive. At the age of 4, why chance it? If he develops an interest later, we'll re-visit the issue.

On July 4 my husband and I took both kids to a Class A minor league game. We got lawn seats. It was raining that day, and the game was delayed over an hour. We got soaked, but had a blast. The kids had lots of room to run around. No reactions.

This league sent out ticket vouchers for a free game to us. They felt bad that the game was delayed because of rain, that the entertainment had to be cancelled, and that the firework show wasn't up to standard. So we get to go to another game (for free!) on Labor Day weekend. We just made sure they weren't for a date where the free give-away was a bag of peanuts.
