I just thought I'd let people know that Barilla is now marketing pasta sauce in an unusual, hourglass-shaped container. They call these sauces "Restaurant Creations". Each section of the container contains a different type of sauce. When I was at the grocery store today, I picked up the one with pesto on the top to see if it contained pinenuts. Although my son is allergic to macadamias (as well as peanuts), we avoid all treenuts just in case, but I was curious to see if perhaps this pesto was nutless.

To my surprise, the pesto was made with cashews! I would never have expected that. I thought pesto usually contained pinenuts and occasionally contained walnuts.

I haven't called the manufacturer to see if this product is made on the same lines as their other sauces, but we won't be using any Barilla sauces.

Thought you all might want to know, since so many PA people also avoid treenuts.

TYVM

I would avoid, in general, buying ANYTHING that says 'pesto' -- meaning -- to me -- pesto=nuts=bad

But I would certainly buy other sauces made by barilla, lets say... unless I see an allergen statement on it...

Then I may consider putting it back on the shelf, maybe depending on how I feel that day, kwim?

But thats us (and its for DW).

Don't most pasta sauce companies make a pesto variety? Which pasta sauce do you usually buy?

Jason

Same here. But occasionally pesto sauces don't include nuts, which is why I bothered to check the label.

Yup. I know what you mean. But my concern with this product is that the other varieties, which weren't pesto, didn't have any allergy warning (and we all know that they probably don't use separate lines, since they don't use separate lines for their filled pastas despite the fact that the mushroom variety contained peanut oil, and they also didn't label those other varieties as "may contain").

Also, there are a good number of TNA people who are allergic to just one or two treenuts, and therefore don't make as much effort to avoid the others. And those people would never expect pesto sauce to contain cashews. They'd expect pinenuts. Or maybe walnuts. But never cashews. That's the only reason I thought this product was worth mentioning here. Just to make it less likely someone would be caught by surprise.

Yes, as far as I know, most do. We usually use Ragu, but I don't give it to my PA/TNA child, because he doesn't like tomato sauce.
