I took my son to his yearly appointment today and was not a happy mommy! My son is 3 and has dairy, egg, peanut, and other small allergies. I was hoping that the milk was going to decrease - boy was I wrong! The egg went from a 4 to a 3, but milk and peanut were HUGE hives on his little back. The milk was so big that it looked like a star. I asked the nurse if that was a new kind of thing and she said "no, that's the first time I've ever seen that. It's the biggest 'reaction hive' I've ever seen." Not very encouraging, to say the least! I also asked him to be tested for some tree nuts, he scored a 4+ for both that he was tested. He also scored a 3 for dogs-of which we have one!!!
I also told the doctor of a reaction my son had last year to milk where he was coughing, gaggin, then he stopped. He told me I should have given the epi without hesitation. He told me that up to 8 hours later he could've had a reaction and died!! Wow, did that open my eyes. I'm more scared about the milk than the peanut right now.
I guess I have to look at the positive...his egg allergy has decreased a little and we've had a pretty good year with no "major" reactions.
Well, I just had to get on here and vent, so thanks for listening.

Gee I'm so sorry to hear Markus' mom! I can understand. Unfortunately alot of the kids have milk allergies also. There is hope maybe though. My son will be 9 in 3 weeks. He was very allergic to milk as an infant and thank goodness I was proactive enough to bring him to an allergist. That's when I found out about his severe PA. Well anyway, Mike was tested last april when he was 7 3/4 yr old for the milk. It was down to a 1+ for casein only!! He now enjoy dairy products of all kinds. He still does not like the taste of cheese or regular milk. He will only drink 1% or skim milk because he is use to the taste of soy milk. Keep your hopes up maybe with strict avoidance for another couple of years, his reaction may lessen. It did for us. Not to say that it will diappear completely but the studies show that a milk allergy is grown out of 80% of the time. GOOD LUCK!! There is alot of us that have been there and understand how you are feeling. I felt that way when I got Mikes CAP RAST back 2 weeks ago and he is a 5 bordering 6. Really thought it would have been less. It took a few days to come to terms with the info. So just remember you are in the realm of kindred spirits here on this site. Keep your chin up and continue to do the great work you are in keeping your beautiful and precious child safe! Boy they have a way of making a cruddy situation feel more upsetting. Sorry you had to deal with that. Very scary. Best wishes

I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you're having. I know it isn't easy.
I hate to do this but I want to caution you on what your doctor said about "up to 8 hours". My daughter had a reaction 12 hours and 14 hours after exposure. The 12 hour reaction was biphasic...she immediately had one which subsided quickly and another set in 12 hours later in our peanut free home when she had eaten nothing since the exposure. The 14-hour one occurred, best we can tell, via a contact reaction! She was swimming in a pool where the kids had just eaten PBJ on the pool deck (found out 4 days later). The table had been washed properly but the children's hands weren't. Assuming it was from the pool ladder then my daughter touched her eye (majority of reaction was surrounding her eyes). It was a minor reaction but given we had no idea about the PBJ, it scared the wits off us. We double checked everything she had 48 hours prior. Given that the PBJ was there and wasn't taken care of properly, we are assuming this the culprit. Still amazes us that it occurred 14 hours later.
Sorry. I know that doesn't make things easier but I would hate it if, heaven forbid, he had another reaction and it showed up 9 or 10 hours later. Could be different with other allergens. This is just my experience with peanuts.
Wishing you peace and safety,
Andrea

Oh, Colleen, I'm so sorry to hear this! I know you have been doing such a good job taking care of your little one. I'll just keep you in my thoughts and hope that next year you will have better news. I was told our children's systems aren't really fully operational until they are 5.
