We had been in Hershey Park for a few days last week. I was surprised to have one of the waitresses tell me that most of the food items in the park are fried in peanut oil! We never ate at any of the food places in the park so I never had the opportunity to verify this, but just thought I'd make others aware of what I was told. Also, we ate at one of the restaurants at the Hershey Lodge - the hostess and our waitress were both very helpful with checking and doubling checking that they use only vegetable oil but I will tell you, on the kids menu, PBJ sandwhich is an option. I reminded our waitress and hostess and the chef that we are concerned about cross contamination and to be very cautious in the kitchen since they serve PBJ and everyone was very accomodating but guess what? The little girl sitting at the table right next to us ordered the PBJ sandwhich! I thought i was going to fall over! Thank God my DD was done with her dinner right about the time the other family's dinner with the PBJ arrived, and my husband took her out of the restaurant and in to the game room. Does it seem like Murphy's Law follows me around, or what!!!! Just wanted to relate our experiences and warn everyone about the peanut oil being used in the park!

Stay safe,
Diane

Wow, sorry you had such a bad experience. What are they thinking frying in Peanut Oil!! We were thinking of visiting Hershey, but definitely not now. I am so glad that you are home safe and sound. Thanks for letting us know!

Hi Robin! I'll tell you, I was really surprised at Hershey especially since it is such a "kid" place and you'd think they'd be more allergy aware. The only reassuring thing is that the Hershey Medical Ctr. is right across the street! Even the surrounding fast food restaurants, with the exception of McDonald's, weren't so great. I had conflicting info from Wendy's about p'nut oil - one person said NO p'nut oil and another said YES! The local Pizza Hut just told me I'd have to read their web site because they really didn't know about the allergy info. One manager at a Pizza Hut on rte. 422 about 10 mins. away was VERY helpful and said he had personally read ingredients and they were safe. I had also spoke to the Applebee's manager and he said no to p'nut oil but to stay away from desserts. The Hershey Lodge has a grill that is separate from the hotel but right next door and the chef there said that the children's menu should be fine but not to have the desserts (tree nuts). We didn't have anything in the park except for soft drinks. If you do decide to go, just be prepared with some of your own foods and ask, ask, ask and then ask again!!!!! If we do a return trip, I'll post any updates!!!

Stay safe -
Diane

Ali's Mom,

In your post you said the girl at the table next to you was served PB&J. This seemed to have caused you alarm and I was wondering if your child is smell/touch sensitive to peanuts?

Hi, just returned from Hershey Park and had a great time! We also did eat burgers and fries at the park (Shakey's Drive In) and everything is fried in Veg oil. I wanted to have my PA son take a picture with the Reeses character with his thumb down, but my hubby thought it wasn't a good idea.......oh well. We had fun!

Maureen - So glad to hear your positive experience. Actually, we are going back in two weeks - the kids just love it there and I always feel safe with McDonald's which is close by (although hate to have them eat so much fast food!!!!). Now I can have a safe alternative. Where did you stay? How was the hotel?? Thanks for any further info!!!

Diane, we stayed in Harrisburg about 10 minutes away at a Holiday Inn Express. I supplied breakfast for my son, but they had yogurt and some cereal and fruit which I am sure would be safe. As I said, the Shakey's Drive Inn burgers and fries were great at the park......have fun! Maureen
