hi all!

I had an interesting experience at a Subway this weekend. I'm usually extremely observant, but for some reason never thought of this til I saw it.

I was in line waiting and one of the employees took a peanut butter cookie from the cookie-thing for a customer. He then started to make my sandwich. I was like, "Um...I need to change your gloves please and make me a new sandwich. You touched a peanut butter cookie and I am allergic."

The manager was there and remade my sandwich on clean everything...and apologized. But, I had never thought about that possibility for cross contamination. So, from now on when I go to deli's and such I will let them know of my allergy and ask the manager to supervise my order.

Geesh!

I think they make the cookies right there in the store, using the same pans they use for the bread.

I don't let my PA son eat at Subway, but I know some PA people do eat there safely, so it might be fine for you. If you're concerned, it would probably be a good idea to discuss it with the store manager to find out how the cookies are made and how they are handled.

Hello

Here in Canada, at least, I have never seen a peanut butter cookie at Subway. The only cookie with nuts is the white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, but we avoid all cookies anyways because of my son's egg allergy. Maybe it is a new item - has anyone else ever seen it in Canada?

Because of the risk of mayonnaise contamination we also specify that clean gloves be always used before preparing my son's sandwich.

With regards to the pans, they actually use pans with grooves to make the bread and flat pans for the cookies so that is not really a potential source of contamination. The subway website has a very good document that lists the allergens present in every ingredient used at subway, I suggest consulting it if you are concerned.

take care

deb

I have NEVER seen a Peanut Butter cookie at Subway in all of the cities I have travelled. Usually they are Macedamia nuts.

Subway was my ds last meal "out", even got him a sugar cookie (they do sell PB cookies at ours). I guess we're fortunate all he got was some small hives and didn't suffer more from our lack of education. It was 3 days later we went to the allergist.

Hi Deb,

Same with me. I have never seen a peanut butter cookie at any of the Subway shops in Toronto, so I can eat at Subways (usually a few times a month).

The only time I ever saw peanut butter cookies at a Subway was when we were in NYC, so I didn't eat there.

hi - this was in Tucson,AZ and I've seen the PB cookies in a few places in town. I did talk to the manager about the cookies and bread...different pans and even different ovens (b/c of the contamination of allergens factor)

That's great to know about the separate pans. I've never asked--just assumed. I'll ask next time I go to a Subway.

I would never in a million years considered Subway a risk...but now it completely makes sense and I am no longer comfortable with that resteraunt. I haven't noticed any peanut butter cookies in subway (Canada) but I've never really paid much attention. We haven't gotten the cookies because dh is allergic to Brazil nuts and they do have one containing them sometimes.

Hi mommysamuels,

I think Subway in Canada is fine. I eat there quite often and they don't have peanut butter cookies in any of the Subways that I have been to here in Canada. I am curious.. why are you now hesitant to eat there? From what I've read, it's only the USA ehere the peanut butter cookies are baked.

Mommysamuels, I don't think it's a risk in Canada. The ones in the US, and Korea, where I live, have peanut butter cookies. Also, unfortunately, the ones in Korea have sesame seeds in some breads and my son is allergic to sesame seeds.

My local Subway is terrible. I had never had a bad experience with Subway until I moved here a year and half ago, they had always been very accomodating. But the one here had advertised the new (at the time) kids meal that didn't have the cookie. But when I asked for it, they said they don't have it and insisted on giving us the cookie. Of course I refused it explaining my son's allergy, but they were reluctant to not give it to me. Whenever they see my son, they want to give him a cookie, even though I now order him the grown-up meal, or just a sub. And the worst part is the woman who is almost always there is the mother of our pediatrician's receptionist!
