Anyone in Ontario, Canada Have Elementary Aged Children Eating in Cafeterias?

Okay, totally new situation possibly being presented to me (you know I don't deal well with new situations )

I have never heard of this in Ontario, Canada in the public school system. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. I just haven't come across it.

I thought that children ate in their classrooms until they reached middle school (and now finding out that middle school *may* actually mean Grade 6).

Then, for middle school, I would have to worry about the cafeteria "thing".

But now, I have heard that the school my children will be attending *might* have a cafeteria.

Does anyone else in Ontario have a cafeteria rather than their child eating in the classroom that is not in middle school (I began cafeteria eating in the dinosaur ages in Grade 7)?

If so, how do you deal with this with your PA child? Do you still request a "peanut free" classroom? Do you have a "peanut free" table?

This is terrible but I'm actually hoping the person who told me the school has a caf is mis-informed.

Is it okay for me to say that I don't feel like dealing with this although I know so many members here do each and every year of their child's schooling?

Many thanks and best wishes!

My DD did not have to deal with cafc until grade 7/8. She did not eat in the classroom. She had 3-6 friends stay in the class with her to eat her lunch. This made her very popular since no one wanted to eat in the caf.
Your sons school should be open this week to go and speak with someone about his allergies. I know all the Principals are at the school this week in our District. Some teachers are there setting up their room but they do not get paid until next Tuesday.
Good luck with the caf. if you have one.

KarenT., thank-you. We have a lunch room where tables are set-up, so not a cafeteria per se but certainly not children eating in their classrooms like I'm used to.

I spoke with the principal to-day and have a meeting tomorrow.

Many thanks and best wishes!

Hey, Karen, does that mean that they're making those "big bucks" for only 10 months of work? I thought it kinda got spread out so that they got paid during the summer as well. No wonder my Father always told me I should be a teacher (and this was before the salaries were anything like they are now - yes, I understand it is tenured teachers that have been teaching for years and years that are getting the $75,000.00 in Hastings County, but still, in Hastings County, $75,000.00 will darn near buy you a beautiful Victorian house!).

Only kidding - I'm not meaning to start a fight about teacher's salaries. I could NEVER do their job or pretend that I could. Now, I could possibly do some aspects better than I have seen Jesse's last two do them, but no, it's not the job for me!

Best wishes!

The school my older kids went to, primary kids ate in the gym (tables set up), and older grades ate in classrooms (usually two or three classes were put together).

The school my youngest attends, everyone eats in the gym (again tables are set up).

Both are in Toronto.

Thought I should add: the current school has hot lunches available for purchase. I'm not sure if it's daily or once a week. (No peanut or pb as they are banned from the school.)

Anna Marie, thank-you. Maybe it's a Toronto thing? I honestly didn't think I would be facing this situation for a couple more years at least.

I do think it is going to work out okay, although not 100% sure about that, of course.
I don't deal with change very well and I know our American friends have to deal with the lunchroom scenario from Day #1 of their children's schooling, but I just didn't think I would here in Ontario. I hadn't yet and none of the members who posted had children eating in lunchrooms either.

When I had my meeting this week, there was no mention of a hot lunch being sold.

I just hope it works out for my guy without being socially isolating.

Thanks for the response.

A child’s appetite changes as they develop. Babies grow very rapidly and therefore often eat well. Thanks for sharing the information.
