My dd ate a very small bite of cake that I found out had some imitaion almond extract and i think she reacted mildly- she seemed to get a very dry mouth, got sort of pale, clammy. No wheezing etc. I gave her Benadryl and was this close to giving her Epi but really did not know if she totally needed it. She is so afraid of the shots and hospital.
Would love to hear your stories and experience.
thanks,
Gwen
Mom of dd age 10- allergic to peanuts, tree nuts and sesame
I actually found out that in imitation almond extract their is no almond anything. In pure almond extract they use bitter almond oil.
KimCanada, my dd eats all the fruits you mentioned without problems. I have never thought to keep her away- I bet you would be fine- just my feeling.
Scary thing is I think I freaked my dd out so much that she had a major rush of adrenalin and those were the symptoms she was experiencing. I did give her Benadryl but am so glad I held off on the Epi. At one point I had her so scared she was saying- Mommy just give me the shot- poor thing is only 5 and I made her so nervous and afraid.
I learned a huge lesson- again. I feel so damn guilty and bad that this whole thing even happened. I asked the woman that made the cake if it had any nuts and she said no. After i gave some to my dd I decided to look at the recipe and than I got very nervous.
Sometime this allergy makes me really insane!!

I use Wilton Imitation Almond Extract on occasion with no problems. I read the label, called the company, and they verified it was imitation--no nut-based anything in it.
Ryan doesn't react to any tree fruits listed above either.
How about cross contamination from the woman's kitchen that baked the cake?

Hello
I am sorry to hear about your child. I am TNA and have had anaphylaxis to almonds in the past. I know that 'imitation' almond extract is derived from peach or apricot kernels, also known as 'bitter almonds.' Peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines and cherries are all in the almond family. Has your child had reactions to eating these fruits? I have not eaten any of these fruits since I developed my nut allergy because I am not sure if they are safe because of the pits.
