Annual SPT and wheal bigger than last time!?!?!?

So I took my little guy in to the allergist today for another SPT. It had been a year since his 1st spt when we found out he had pna. I have been SO vigilant in making sure he stayed away from all possible pn/tn. I admit I was hopeful since he was first tested at 4 months old that perhaps it was a false positive and I thought for sure it would at least be a smaller wheal if nothing else since I've been keeping him away from pn/tn.

Last year his wheal for pn was 9mm and today it was 10.5mm. How does it get bigger???? I'm taking him for a RAST draw tomorrow but I'm sure it will be almost a month by the time the military hospital gets the results to my allergist (we're military and will go on-post for the blood draw, but the allergist is civilian).

I just don't understand why it was worse today than it was a year ago when I don't think he has had any exposure at all....sigh.....

I'm always amazed when doctors do repeat skin tests on known allergic people. I've always been under the assumption that generally one ought not to expose someone to a known allergen through cutaneous skin pricking. Course, I'm generally speaking here and I'm no doctor.

But for my children, I would never allow our allergist to SPT my ana child with a known allergen, in fact the doctor would never do it if I asked, I'm sure. I hate the thought of another exposure. We only do blood tests and would only consider doing a SPT after blood test levels decrease to practically nil. And after a negative SPT, we'd be on to an oral challenge. I believe that is protocol for challenges.

At any rate, I'm sorry to hear your little one is still peanut allergic. Testing time is always hard, isn't it?

MommyOfTwo, I'm sorry that your ds is still pa. I know that must have been a big disappointment. However, you have avoided exposure so perhaps it may be a possibility in the future. I totally agree with Krusty's post above re: repeating the spt.

Yeah, no more spt's for us! I think even though his wheal at the first spt was so big there was faint hope that perhaps because he was so young, no known exposure (he was tested because of his eczema) so there was the slight hope that it was perhaps a false-positive and wrong all along.

The allergist always said he didn't like to do the RAST because the spt is more "sensitive". Of course AFTER this spt and he still is very much positive THEN he is ok doing the RAST to follow the numbers. I guess I should have stood my ground more firmly, but I will certainly be standing it now. Being military too means we won't be keeping the same allergist for more than a couple years. I'm curious how the allergist will be in TX. We will likely being seeing the military allergist and I'm just hoping they have experience with little ones.
