My son's allergist just called my husband to say his RAST test was completely negative for peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds and pine nuts! We are just in shock! I have been hoping against hope to have this news some day, but never really thought it would happen!

Andre developed hives after eating some Chinese noodles when he was 21 months old. He had a positive skin test to peanut at that time (very small hive). He's had no exposure or reactions since then. We had a RAST test done last week (he's 3 1/2 now) for peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds and pine nuts and it was 100% negative!

Our allergist explained that the test is approximately 90% accurate, so we are cautiously optimistic. We'll repeat the skin test and blood test in the near future, and will consider an oral challenge in a few years. Even if the skin test and repeat RAST test are negative, we will continue to use extreme caution with nuts and will probably delay the challenge until he is older.

Has this happened to anyone else, and has it truly meant there is NO allergy? I am so afraid to get my hopes up, but this is such great news!

Susan,

Great news if it's true. Good Luck in the future with Andre's tests!
Sounds like how your approaching all of this is very intelligently.

Please keep us posted.

That is great news! I am hoping for future postive results for you.

My son hasn't been retested (he is 21 months now, and was tested a little over 12 months) but we intend on RAST testing again in the next few years.

Ben tested positive to egg, dairy, and peanuts on his first RAST and negative to egg, positive to dairy and peanuts on his second. After the negative RAST to egg we decided to give him the flu shot which has egg in it. He broke out in a rash and hives after the injection. The nurse at the allergy clinic where he got the flu shot told me that a negative RAST means that it was below a measurable level but that the person can still be allergic if they tested positive in the past. She said that just that week they had a child have an anaphylactic reaction to peanut after testing negative.

I hope your negative is real!

Hi,

Well, my son had a reaction to eggs at 13 months old, so we had a skin test done. It showed allergy to eggs, peanuts and shellfish. 6 months later got a second opinion and RAST test done. It showed eggs and black walnut (never tested before. No shellfish and peanuts. Now a year later, a second RAST test shows eggs, black walnut (and couple of other nuts never tested before) and peanuts again! (we never gave him any yet)

I've written some of the top docs to see how accurate these tests are. I've read a couple of places that there are a lot of false positives and the RAST is only about 60% accurate. I don't know what to believe that is why I'm going to talk with some of these docs.

Good luck--I hope I can post good news like this some day.
Rhonda
