DS's school sponsored an Alex's Lemonade Stand today to raise money for childhood cancer research. For those who are not familiar, Alex was diagnosed with cancer when she was 4. She had a lemonade stand to raise money for reasearch. Over the next few years her lemonade stand grew into a nation-wide series of fundraisers. Alex died a year or two ago, I think she was 8.
Anyway, they were selling a cup of lemonade and a chocolate chip cookie for $1 donation (kids could give more). I was asked by the mom in charge of organizing it to help out. I did know that they have peanut/nut free cookies made by another mom of a PA child.
I thought it would be a good opportunity to educate on FA. I was wrong. It turns out that the other moms involved were so well prepared for allergies that there was nothing left to inform them of. They had the nut free cookies set well away from the others. One class came through at a time, and as each came, the allergy list was checked first. FA kids went through the line at the front of their class. Anyone who had touched the regular cookies was not allowed to touch lemonade or the nut free cookies. The regular cookies had no nuts of any kind as an ingredient, just the possibility of cross contamination, as they were made by volunteers in their own kitchens.
So I must say, I am impressed at how well they thought it out, and how careful they were with just "may contains." I was happy to be there to see how it was handled, but even happier to see how well the moms who planned it did plan.
BTW, I have known for some time that these particular moms are very good, as I get calls from them regarding birthday treats, etc.

ABOUT ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND
In 2000, a 4 year old cancer patient named Alexandra "Alex" Scott announced a seemingly simple idea -she was holding a lemonade stand to raise money to help "her doctors" find a cure for kids with cancer. The idea was put into action by Alex and her older brother, Patrick, when they set up the first "Alex's Lemonade Stand for Childhood Cancer" on their front lawn in July of 2000.
For the next four years, despite her deteriorating health, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise money for childhood cancer research. Following her inspirational example, thousands of lemonade stands and other fundraising events have been held across the country by children, schools, businesses, and organizations, all to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer. As of May 2006, her national campaign has raised over $6 million for childhood cancer research.
On August 1, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8 after battling cancer for 7

That is such a cool story!
I hope that those volunteers are able to write up how they handled the event so that future events can be done as well! Our PSA has a file where such directions are kept. Maybe the school or the charity has something similar?
Is Alex's Lemonade Stand a regional fund? I haven't heard of it.....
