Egg Allergy Alert: Candy Sweet Spots
Bee International, Inc. of Chula Vista, CA is recalling its 2oz. packages of candy "Sweet Spots" because they may contain undeclared egg protein. People who have allergies to egg may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
The recalled "Sweet Spots" were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through food distributors.
The product comes in a 2oz clear plastic package marked with lot code 2158613 on the back and bearing the UPC 0-73563-00471-6. It is a candy item consisting of small drops of candy on a backing paper that are peeled off and consumed.
On 9/10/13, FDA received a complaint from Raleigh, NC on a candy product called Sweet Spots. A child had a reaction to the candy resembling an allergic reaction. The child is allergic to eggs, wheat, and milk. A sample was collected from the retail store where the candy was originally purchased. FDA received the lab results which indicated that it tested positive for egg allergen. The only allergen warning is that it contains soy. The product is labeled as being made in China but distributed by Bee International in Chula Vista, CA
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the egg-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.
Consumers who have purchased 2oz packages of "Candy Sweet Spots" with lot code 2158613 are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-421-6465, Monday-Friday from 7:30am-4:00pm, PST.
