Hi there! I'm the media rep for MedicAlert Canada in Alberta & Sask. I'm currently writing an article for back to school magazines/newspapers on children and allergies. I'm looking for any experiences you've had in these two provinces: positive or negative, in dealing with schools. Feel free to contact me on this message board or by personal e-mail. No replies will be used without your say-so.
I think this could be a good chance to get an important message out to a broad audience.
Thanks in advance!
Hi JJ
I have a lot of information on dealing with our daycare and have just been through trying to organize dealing with my daughter's allergy as she is starting school in Calgary in the fall (kindergarden). I contacted the Calgary Catholic School Board and they do not have a policy in place - it depends on the individual principals of the school. Overall, both the teacher and principal of our school have been supportive although I still have outstanding concerns about the training of staff who will be monitoring the school yard during recess time. Unfortunately, the kindergarden kids go outside at the same time as the big kids. i have prepared flyers to be posted in the classroom and staffroom and will be meeting with the school again closer to her start date. if you want some details on our experiences with daycare (which have been up and down - they were good at first but have since become lax since she has not had a reaction) or getting ready for school, please e-mail me and let me know.

Hi, JJ. This is related to what you're looking for, at least a bit. My son is still a baby, but I am a teacher for a large public school board in Alberta. What I know so far, now that I have a child with peanut allergy, is that there are at least a couple of "peanut free" schools in our system, as well as in systems in nearby cities. (e.g. one school I've heard of - if any of the kids bring peanut butter etc. in their lunches, THEY are the ones who have to eat in a separate room as the school is "peanut free".) I also know of a playschool that is nut free - a Mom had to take home a bunch of baking she had done for them for a bake sale or Christmas or something because of nuts. I've been on leave for awhile so am not yet up to date on all this (as before I had my son, I didn't think about it very much) but if there's anything interesting at my new school/policies I hear of, would you like to know?
