Peanut-Free/Nut-Free Directory
Our directory is intended as a resource for people with peanut and nut allergies. It contains foods, helpful products, and much more.
If you have a child with a food allergy that will be entering day care or school in the fall, now is the time to start thinking about a food allergy plan.
There are several types of written plans that you can have in place and which one you choose depends upon your own circumstances.
At minimum, all children with food allergies should have an allergy action plan. This plan details what to do in the event of a reaction and lists the types of foods your child is allergic to as well as signs and symptoms of a reaction.
Beyond that, you may choose an Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP or IHP), a 504 Plan, or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Each of the above plans have certain eligibility criteria and depend upon the school and your child's allergies. Be sure to talk with your school nurse, your child's teacher and possibly the school principal to work out a plan that is right for you.

*My daughter starts Kindergarten tomorrow and I am SoOo nervous!! We have had several meeting with the principal, school nurses, and her teacher and they STILL don't seem to comprehend how serious this is. My husband and I feel like she is going to have a reaction at school because of how little they know about a peanut and tree nut allergy. We have provided them with literature and websites and am meeting with a lawyer and am doing EVERYTHING we can to ensure that our daughter stays safe. Unfortunately we may be looking to place our daughter in a different school. So, shawnsallergy, I know EXACTLY how you feel. You are not alone.*

We had the meeting also...
We had the meeting also... But I feel they still dont understand. I feel sorry for him because he has to eat in the office and not able to ride the bus. I cried knowing his day is going to be different and he will not be able to do what the other kids do. This has been much harder on us than I planed. I hope you and your family are blessed with a healthy school year. Keep me posted. Wouldnt it be great if there was a school for peanut allergy children only?
I am sick to my stomach
I am sick to my stomach thinking about my little one starting preschool with a newly diagnosed peanut allergy. We've hardly had time to get our household under control and get the proper groceries....and now we have to start thinking about putting him in a possibly unsafe environment. I hope everyone is getting the support from the schools that they need!
They have my son in the
They have my son in the office eating. Is very sad that he has to eat alone. He just keeps asking me why. I wish a better plan will happen. Any ideaswil be great.
My Principal wanted the same
My Principal wanted the same thing for my son. I asked if he felt this was the least restrictive environment to handle the situation. I wanted a peanut free table in the lunch room--open to any studen who did not bring peanuts in his/her lunch. That option was meant with great resistance--not enough room in the lunch room etc. After I used that phrase.. it opened the conversation back up to how we could create a safe place for him to eat WITH his classmates. What came to be was a desk that was moved between the tables that was just for him. Those that sat on the ends of the table closest to him had no peanuts in their lunches. Good luck.
Is he just allergic to
Is he just allergic to peanuts? What i did with my son is that he sits at the end of the table (same spot everyday) and i spoke with the cafeteria monitor and she knows exactly where he sits. Since the school serves nothing with peanuts anyone eating school lunch can sit around him and the kids that bring their lunch sit on the other end.
Our school is not peanut
Our school is not peanut free, thats a huge problem. They serve peanut buter sandwhiches, cookies and a peanut butter fruit tray. They are scared because of his age to put him in the lunch room. You are blessed to have a p-nut free school.
I just started working today
I just started working today with my son's school towards putting in place a section 504 plan for him look it up it may help.
Im loooking in to that. We
Im loooking in to that. We have health plan in place.Hmm... I wonder how they are different?
With the 504 plan they
With the 504 plan they educate the kids in the class on what is a food allergy and why they can not bring peanuts to class. They may send a letter home to the parents of the kids in his class stating there is a kid with a peanut allergy and not to send peanut products to school. You have a written agreement with the school and district that must be followed every year. example: all kids will wash their hand before and after lunch.
I'm amazed to see so many
I'm amazed to see so many posts and so many people having difficulties with their schools.
Schools are just starting to recognize food allergies and many don't realize they are a disability covered under law.
Unfortunately it is up to us as parents to help and educate them.
Lots of school information can be found on my website school resource page:

Thankfully our school system
Thankfully our school system is allergy aware and does listen to parent concerns. My son also sits on the end and the Principal has given him leeway to move if someone is not eating tray lunch. Be persistent and aware that some people will take your concern as you being a paranoid parent. Over time, you will realize that you have to be paranoid to a degree to survive with a child who has severe allergies to any product. I must constantly remind my older child to keep hands out of face, wash hands and don't take snacks from anyone. These are small measures and can only protect him so much, but it does result in fewer reactions such as asthma and hives. Be as dilligent as you need to be and don't let anyone deter you on your mission to keep your child safe. It is a never ending battle. Make sure your school has your child's action plan on file. I have always had one filled out by his Allergist and it stays with the school health assistant or nurse if available.
I need some advice. i am
I need some advice. i am getting ready to meet with my 2nd grader's principal, teacher, and school nurse to discuss alternatives to the "allergy table" at lunch time. While my daughter has been incident-free during Kidergarten and 1st grade, she still hates lunch time. we've had many tearful discussions on why she has to sit alone, or with only one or two other kids during lunch. She has a severe peanut/tree nut allergy (not airborn, has to injest). Any advice greatly appreciated.
Hi, I've been reading your
Hi, I've been reading your posts with great interest. My son is 6 1/2 and has a tree nut allergy. His pre school was nut free and there were lots of parents in the same boat...they were so amazing at managing this, however as a 1st grader in public school - I feel lost. They have a peanut free table where he eats (unable to be with his friends and lunch is the only time they can socialize). The teachers and principal do not seem to care - all they care about is that he is covered...he has an epi pen there... They will not discourage parents or children from bringing nut products in to the school. And also..the fact that the allergic kids are put at some table alone is a disgrace....they are being penalized for an allergy they cannot help. We are requesting to meet w/the school about obtaining a 504 plan for our son...I suggest you do the same. Good luck!
This is a story Ive heard
This is a story Ive heard over and over. And have went thru it. This is a hard thing and others DO NOT UNDERSTAND!! I'm sorry to hear what you are dealing with, these kid's are being marked as different at a eairly age. We have a health plan in place, I'd like to do the 504, but the school don't want to. It put more on them. Sad.. I'm starting a surrport group, just because I feel like I have no one to talk to. And there are many parents and care giveers that need surrport. Thanks for you input.
It is too bad that our
It is too bad that our children have to sit alone at a "peanut free table". My daughter has been able to move from table to table to sit with other students that don't have any kind of peanut item in their lunch. Luckily she is not allergic to tree nuts, too. There are those days, that there is no safe place to eat with other students, so she does end up sitting alone.
My 5 year old just started
My 5 year old just started Pre-K at a school that does not have a peanut free policy, and does not intend on getting one in place. I have had several discussions with them and it is so frustrating to be explaining these issues to someone who looks at you like you're overeacting. He is the only student out of 780 that has the allergy so the odds are against me in educating them. I bought him a "food mat" that he eats his lunch on so his food doesn't touch the table, but he is allowed to eat with the other children. There are days when I am so anxious while he's at school, I feel like I am going to explode. I know what you mean, it is such a feeling of helplessness!
I feel the same way...
I feel the same way... Everytime I send him to school. Last year at his pre-k it was PEANUT FREE! But they decied to TREAT the other kids to a P&J. He had a reaction to just being in the room. Luckly only mild because it wasnt injested. But still I scared to everyday when he goes to school.
