Me: Who in your family has an allergy, how old are they, and what are they allergic to?:
Tina: My oldest daughter, Karis, who is 6 is allergic to tree nuts and possibly some vegetables (avocados, peppers). We have not had a chance to get her tested due to us recently moving. At this point it hasn't been extreme. I've just controlled it by avoiding these certain foods.
Me: What is your biggest fear when dealing with the allergy?:
My biggest fear is that as she gets older it will get worse.
Me: How does the allergy affect you on a daily basis?:
Tina: It doesn't too much. The times I really notice it is when baking and usually just avoid recipes with nuts or leave them out of the recipe.
Me: Have you or your loved one ever had a reaction?:
Tina: Her reaction has been itching of the mouth and minor break out around the mouth and puffing of the lips that lasts a short time.
Me: What has having an allergy taught you about yourself or being a parent?:
Tina: That I need to continuously be mindful of exposing her to these things outside of our home. Going to birthday parties or other functions can be difficult for her if all the desserts are filled with nuts.
Me: What advice can you give to anyone who is dealing with an allergy?:
Tina: I need to listen to my own words here, but I think testing is very important. It's good to be educated and know exactly what it is that triggers the allergy.
