Udi’s Gluten-Free Hot Dog and Hamburger Buns: A Product Review
Although I do like various types of gluten-free bread, Udi’s gluten-free breads has come to be kind of a go-to for me.
On the whole, I think their bread most closely resembles the gluten-filled bread I remember in texture, taste, function, and every other way that really counts. It is one of the few breads you can eat with a sandwich and not have the bread crumble apart in your hands. I am a sandwich kind of gal so that puts Udi’s bread at the top of my list. Plus, its peanut and nut-free which means my son and I can eat it together…definite bonus!
Not long ago, the folks at Udi’s asked me if I would take their new gluten-free hot dog and hamburger buns out for a test drive, and I was more than happy to comply seeing as how it’s already one of my favorites!
Before I get to my actual product review, I want to clear up any questions you might have regarding Udi’s allergen labeling policy in light of the release of their new line of nut and peanut-based cookies. I know the new line of nut-filled products caused me concern about some of the Udi’s products my son (who is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts) and I usually enjoy together. When I asked about their current nut labeling policy, I received the following statement:
“Our baked goods are completely nut free and made in dedicated nut free (tree nut & peanut free) facilities. Some of our granola products do contain nuts, however these are made in completely separate plants from the rest of our gluten-free baked goods. Additionally, our three new cookie varieties (Peanut Butter Coconut, Maple Pecan Chocolate Chip and Salted Caramel Cashew) are also made in a separate bakery. Please check out our product catalog for the list of ingredients in each of our products.“ For more Udi’s allergen information, please click here.
There’s a lot of peer pressure out there to cater to the gluten-free population because it is (for better or worse) “popular.” For me, since I have celiac, it’s a necessity. So, I am beyond thrilled to know that Udi’s is one of the few gluten-free providers on the market still catering to those with gluten and nut-free needs. Thank you, from the bottom of The Food Allergy Mom’s heart!!!
On to the product review…
As in the case of most Udi’s products, I was extremely pleased with the Udi’s gluten-free hot dog and hamburger buns. For starters, the buns look and smell like their gluten-filled counterparts which is a definite plus for young children and adults alike. The texture is both soft and fluffy and yields a slight buttery taste that is the perfect complement to any hot dog or hamburger.
Bottom Line: Whether you’re just beginning your food allergy journey or you’ve been traveling it for years, Udi’s gluten-free products are a fantastic place to start and won’t leave you missing gluten at all!
*Special Note: I received packages of Udi’s gluten-free hot dog buns and hamburger buns to review for the purposes of this blog. My review is both a candid and honest reflection of my personal views of these products.*
