Traveling With a Peanut Allergy

It seems that no matter how much effort is put into traveling safely there are always going to being things that stand in your way of making your trip truly allergen free.  Just this weekend I traveled to NYC via bus.  While there were no incidents on the way to the city, we did have trouble while we were there, and on our return trip as well.  For starters, before we checked out of the hotel room, we did a room check to make sure that we hadn’t left anything behind.  When we lifted the bed skirt to make sure that nothing had made its way under the bed, we found a giant almond on the floor.  If I had seen that when we checked in, I would have possibly changed rooms.  Thank goodness nothing happened!  As for the ride home, we were at the front of the line to board the bus for our return trip home, which meant we got the pick of the litter in regards to seating.  We chose the very front seat of the bus with the best view, and abundant leg room.  Sounds great, right?  Well it was until the bus driver cracked open a bag of roasted peanuts and started eating them as he drove.  While the smell was luckily not too overpowering, I still needed to cover my nose and mouth until well after he stopped eating them.  I’m relieved to say that the only reaction I had was a minor sore throat and itchy eyes.  Traveling with an allergy is very scary, and no matter how much you prepare you can never truly be ready for the random encounters with allergens that may occur.  I will be flying in less than a month, and already I am taking precautions so that my flights are as safe as I can possibly make them.  Stay tuned for my post about air travel tips for peanut allergy sufferers, and until then, travel safe!
