This weekend Kane was asked to go to a drive in movie with his friend and mum, what’s wrong with that you might think, well there isn’t anything wrong unless your child has a severe allergy to Peanuts!
Kane hasn’t stayed at his friend’s house before so we haven’t had many dealings with his mum so she wasn’t fully versed on what to do and not to do. What concerned us was the drive in movie was about 1 1/2 hours drive from our house and quite a drive from the hospital. Kane was a bit apprehensive as he has been of late, but we didn’t want him to see that we were concerned as it would be good for his self confidence to go alone. It is such a big decision to make, on one hand you want your child to feel they are confident enough to go alone, but on the other you feel you still have to be next to them holding their hand!
After having a long chat to Kanes friend’s mum we decided to let him go, I spent about an hour with his mum explaining what to do in an emergency and what signs to look for. Kane is well aware of the signs, but the thing with these anaphylactic shock’s they don’t always follow the same pattern! I packed Kane some lollies that are made in a nut free factory so he knew he would be safe with them, but he did say he wasn’t going to eat anything, although he did!
It was a very worrying night for Rod and I, but we were so proud that he went, if you have read my previous posts then you will understand. When he came home he had a blast and he was grinning from ear to ear, I could tell he was pleased with himself and I hope that it has now made him realise that he can go out there alone, he just has to be extra careful and make sure he has his EpiPen on him at all times.
