The time has come for Kane to head off to Camp on Wednesday, he didn’t want to go, but I had to force him in a way, which sounds terrible, but he has got to get used to the fact that he has these allergies, but he still needs to live his life. I am going to be a terrible mess when he goes, but that will have to wait for when I get home.
As for the preparations, the camp assure me that it is a Nut Free environment and they are well aware of cross contamination issues, but I have drummed it into Kane’s head that he must have his Epi-Pen on him at all times, to ask the chef himself, if he can and to rub some of the food onto his lips and wait a while before he actually eats anything. I’m hoping that the food they supply isn’t processed stuff, which I am assured it’s not, but we shall see. In the event that it is processed food, I will be giving Kane’s teacher food for him, obviously I can’t give him proper dinners, but things like bread, tin beans , etc., that he can make himself if he has too, which no doubt he will do anyway as I don’t think he will trust the chef! Fortunately it is only for a few days so I haven’t got to send him with heaps!
So if your son and daughter comes home with the letter saying about school camp, don’t throw it away and hope they will forget about it, unfortunately we have to face these hurdles as parents, no matter how worried we are going to be, our children look to us for guidance and if they see that we are cool with it, even though we’re not!, it gives them the confidence to face the world on their own.
I will let you know how it went on his return, in the meantime, I’m heading off to the bottle shop to buy a few bottles of wine to keep me sane! :)
