Predicting Peanut Allergies

Researchers recently discovered something unexpected when evaluating infants with known egg or milk allergy. These babies are at a higher risk to develop a peanut allergy later in life. They also discovered that another risk factor for developing peanut allergy is moderate to severe eczema in infancy.

These findings have been published in the May 2010 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. They are the first published clinical findings of CoFAR, the Consortium of Food Allergy Research a major food allergy research program. The milk and egg allergic infants will be followed until they are 5 years of age to see if their allergy to milk or eggs continues and to see if they indeed develop an allergy to peanuts.

In the meantime, researchers encourage parents of children with egg or milk allergy to talk to their medical care practitioner before incorporating peanuts into their child's diet.

My son had signs of mild

My son had signs of mild eczema right after I delivered him. Two years later he was diagnosed with egg, milk, wheat, beef and shellfish allergies. My husband had taken him to the grocery store and a clerk handed him a cookie. He immediately started throwing up and he continued to do so for about an hour. We found out from the grocery store that it was a peanut butter cookie and after testing found out that he had severe tree nut and peanut allergies. This post is so accurate because at age five he lost the egg, milk, wheat, beef and shellfish allergies and today lives with the peanut and tree nut allergies. If you have any more information, please post. Is there a link to eczema and is there a way of stopping this reactions to nuts, especially after the other allergies disappeared. If anyone has any information on this topic, please share.
