Seeing eye dogs are regarded as common for those with limited sight.
For those with a severe peanut allergy, a peanut sniffing dog may truly be "man's best friend". An 8 year old Colorado girl with peanut allergies has been all over the news recently. She and her peanut sniffing guide dog, Rock'O, travel everywhere together. He carries her medication and warns her if there are peanuts nearby. For example, when they were out playing in the backyard, Rock'O kept the girl away from an area where squirrels had dragged in some peanut shells.
Peanut sniffing dogs will enable severely peanut allergic people to go to school, work, malls and other places that may have been unsafe. According to Peanutdog.com, breeders of these special dogs, "breeds most commonly used for peanut detection are poodles, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds, as well as dogs of mixed breeds. Poodles can often be owned by people whom otherwise cannot have a dog, as they do not shed and are relatively dander free".
