Peanut Allergies in Kids Blogs

When Do You Start Teaching Kids About Their Peanut Allergies?

People often ask, "When should I start teaching my child about his/her food allergies?"

My response is, "Now".

Okay, a ten month old is not going to understand that they could get really sick if they eat something with peanut in it, but babies and toddlers watch their parents every move. Talk out loud to your child as you read ingredient labels. Say, "Let me grab your EpiPen®" every time you leave the house. Read books to your youngster about food allergies. I like "Allie the Allergic Elephant" (by Nicole Smith, 2006) and "Peter Can't Eat Peanuts (by Nadine O'Reilly, 2006) . Use food allergy flashcards like "Beyond a Peanut" (www.beyondapeanut.com)with a toddler.

As your child gets older, have them help you read labels. Talk about why you're reading the labels and what you're looking for. Have your child pick out an acceptable medical alert band and a carrier for medications. By the time my son was five, he was carrying his own EpiPen® in a waist pack.

Be matter of fact about your child's allergies from the time they are very young. This will allow them to see food allergy as just another part of who they are.

Becoming Part of a Peanut Allergy Clinical Trial

My son has the "dreaded" peanut allergy. He is now in school, out of my sight for the whole day...I'm scared. I'm not there to watch everything that he puts in his mouth. I'm not there to see what food he might trade with a friend during lunchtime. I have moved beyond the thought of simply "surviving" with a peanut allergy for the rest of his life, but instead wanting desperately for him to be cured. I am in the beginning stages of looking at what Clinical Trials are available out there (specifically in the Midwest) for Peanut Allergies. I will begin praying for two things in regards to these steps: 1. that he takes part in a clinical trial and 2. that he is not in the placebo group.
